Nearly 40 new craftspeople – from seven countries and 16 states – have been accepted to exhibit in the highly-selective juried Handmade® at the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®). The winter 2010 edition of Handmade, which features 575 designer-makers and production craft representatives, runs Saturday, January 30 through Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

The Family Groove Mom on the Street
I’m getting back to work! It is not that I didn’t work this summer, because I did put in my share of hours. But to be honest, I also took advantage of the warm summer days and long evenings and enjoyed myself as much as possible with friends and family. I do feel guilty at times that I can set my own schedule, but that is one of the perks of owning your own business.

Handbag designer found knitters at The Redwood

In early 2005, the Mill Valley resident and mother of two dreamed up and started making a line of fashion handbags. She shaped and knit them herself out of 100-percent wools that she washed in the washing machine to add a distinctive felted texture. She added unusual fittings such as vintage removable brooches and fringes of fluffy wool, and hand-sewed on each bag bamboo, beaded or antiqued metallic handles and feet.

Pizzazz showcases boutiques, artisans

Some merchants who are participating also are happy to support the green causes of the show. Sarah Oliver -- owner of sarah oliver handbags in the San Francisco area -- will be selling her hand-knit wool bags in whimsical styles, costing between $162 and $390. Oliver, who hires women at a retirement home to knit the wool before she puts the details on the purses, is returning for her second year at Pizzazz.
